Doesn’t the cake on the cover of this book look fabulous?  It had me at hello.

Today’s review is The Joy of Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Baking by Peter Reinhart & Denene Wallace.

Having to be on a special diet is not easy.  Learning to bake when you are gluten-free can be difficult.  Learning to bake when you need to be both gluten-free AND sugar-free is even more daunting!  What flours do I use?  What sweeteners can I use and how much?  This great cookbook answers all of those questions and more.

First, let me tell you a little bit about the authors.

Peter Reinhart

Peter Reinhart is a baking instructor at Johnson & Wales University. He was the co-founder of the legendary Brother Juniper’s Bakery in Sonoma County, California, and is the author of five books on bread baking, including Brother Juniper’s Bread Book and the modern classic The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, which was named cookbook of the year in 2002 by both the James Beard Foundation and the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Denene Wallace

Denene’s original intent was to create bakery products in her kitchen that would help her manage blood sugar issues.  She was taking 5  insulin shots a day to control her blood sugar.  Now Denene takes NO insulin shots.

She discovered over the years that these products could also be of great benefit to those who suffer from wheat sensitivity (celiac).  As a result of her personal experiences, Denene also believes that these types of products can be an additional tool in achieving and maintaining an individuals’ ideal weight.

Having been an Interior Designer for over 15 years, Denene of course, approached her bread baking projects from an artist’s vantage point – NO RULES.  She experimented with a variety of alternative flours and ingredients. Over time she was able to create excellent tasting bakery products that were sugar free, gluten free, and very low in carbohydrates.

Over a six year period Denene has become an expert in the arena of baking with alternative flours.  She has created and perfected products that provide diabetics and celiac patients with a delicious alternative to conventional bakery goods.

Pretty impressive credentials, right?

Now, on to the cookbook!

“The Joy of Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Baking” is a “must-have” cookbook for anyone who is sensitive to gluten, diabetic, or needs to reduce carbs to prevent illness or lose weight.  The recipes in this book can also easily be made vegan by following the dairy and egg substitution guidelines.

These recipes are easy to follow and use readily available nut and seed flours and alternative and natural sweeteners.  This is a beautiful cookbook, with beautiful photos by Leo Gong.

Do these pancakes look gluten-free and sugar-free to you?  They just look delicious to me!

This is the FIRST recipe I’m trying!!!  Yum!

Just a few of the great recipes in this book are:

  • Italian Herb Bread
  • Cranberry Scones
  • Strawberry-Coconut Muffins
  • Cinnamon-Raisin Coffee Cake
  • Pumpkin Pie (which is really great for the upcoming holidays!)
  • Pecan Sandies
  • Apple Crumble Pie

You can purchase “The Joy of Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Baking” right from The Joy of Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Baking website at a discounted price!  ($16.98)

It may also be purchased at Barnes&Noble

When I received my copy of “The Spunky Coconut: Dairy~Free Ice Cream” in the mail, I knew that I was going to love it, just by looking at the cover photo!

I mean really, what is better than ice-cream?  Well, for me, and others with problems digesting dairy, Dairy-Free Ice Cream!    Kelly V. Brozyna of  The Spunky Coconut has written a beautiful cookbook filled with recipes that are not only dairy-free, but also soy-free, sugar-free and vegan.  As far as I can tell, these recipes are also grain-free and gluten-free, providing you make sure to check your ingredients, such as the spices, to be super sure.  The base for the ice cream in this book is made with coconut milk and either cashew or hemp milk.

You will need an ice cream machine and Kelly also recommends having a good blender to make her ice cream.  The recipes look so delicious, that I’m sure if you don’t have this equipment, you will want to run right out and get it!

My favorite recipes in this book, although they all look so yummy that I had trouble just choosing a few, are:

* Chocolate Hazelnut Ice Cream

*  Rum Raisin Ice Cream

* Pumpkin Ice Cream

* Gingerbread Cookie Dough Ice Cream

For those of you who love frozen yogurt, pudding pops and sorbet, there are great recipes for:

*Orange Cream Frozen Yogurt

* Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Pudding Pops  (Wow!)

*Pomegranate Sorbet

These are just a few of the many recipes found in Kelly’s book!

Kelly has graciously offered to giveaway a copy of “Dairy-Free Ice Cream” to one of our lucky readers!

Amy Green: Simply Sugar & Gluten Free

Welcome to another edition of GlutenFreeTV! Our last episode was with Shirley Braden, of Gluten Free Easily (GFE), and I’m so happy to have with us today Amy Green.

Amy Green completely revamped her diet after being plagued with migraine headaches that wouldn’t go away, lethargy, and an overall feeling of ickiness.

She cut all gluten and refined white sugar. The end result: no more headaches, no more brain fog, an uber-impressive 80 pound weight loss, a successful website, and a new cookbook! GO AMY GO!

Amy shares her story and answers questions that newbies have when they first decide to completely change their diet. It’s scary!

Amy and her publisher have graciously agreed to host a giveaway for her new cookbook. If you’d like to enter, please leave a comment below. I’ll pick a winner (randomly) on July 5th at 5pm pacific.

Enjoy the interview— Amy is wonderful, and I know you’ll think so too.
