Wednesday, July 17, 2013.  This giveaway is now over.  Thanks for all of your comments!  The winner has been randomly chosen and notified by email.  Congratulations Darlene S!

Summertime means more time in the beautiful sunshine.  Laying by the pool, hiking, biking, gardening and more!  All of the extra time in the sun can, unfortunately, mean more sun damage for your skin.  Most dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen EVERYDAY, even when you’re not in the sun!

So what happens if you are sensitive or allergic to the chemicals in “normal” sunscreens?  What if you don’t want to cover yourself with those chemicals everyday and are looking for a more natural alternative?

Goddess Garden Organics All Natural Sunscreens can help!  First, a little about how Goddess Garden began.

From the Goddess Garden website:

Goddess Garden, a Boulder-based skincare company, was founded in 2004 by Nova Covington, entrepreneur and mom. As a new mother, Nova was inspired to create organic skincare products initially for her daughter Paige, who was allergic to chemicals in traditional bath products. Motivated to develop safe skincare solutions, Nova launched natural products using pure minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active agents for sun protection — the highest organic content of any sunscreen on the market.

Goddess Garden Organics All Natural Sunscreen is non-greasy and sheer, unlike a lot of other natural sunscreens I have tried.   These sunscreens are gluten-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and non-GMO.  They do not contain animal products and are not tested on animals so they are cruelty free!

I really love these sunscreens.  They have a pleasant smell and soak into your skin without feeling greasy or leaving a white residue.

Review and Giveaway! SIMPLE SQUARES Whole Food Snack Bars

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012 by Lisa

Friday, December 21, 2012 at 5:30 pm PST.  This giveaway is now OVER.  Thanks to everyone for your comments!  The winner has been randomly chosen and notified via email.  Congratulations Winston!

I think I picked a bad month to start watching my weight.  I have the best of intentions, but there is just so much temptation at this time of year!  Cookies, candy, fudge.  Christmas cupcakes, donuts, sweet coffee drinks (who me?).  Oh my!

Did you know that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average American consumes 156 pounds of sugar every year? Yikes!  A good portion of that sugar is consumed during the holiday season, when we are surrounded by sugary- sweet holiday treats.  Of all the foods we eat, refined sugar is considered to be one of the most harmful, causing series health risks such as inflammation and infection, compromising the immune system and raising insulin levels.

If you have an auto-immune disease like celiac disease, like I do, inflammation can cause a whole lot of issues.  But trying to stay away from sugar is hard for most of us.

Enter SIMPLE SQUARES!  Snack-enthusiast and Simple Squares’ founder, Kimberly Crupi Dobbins, offers a delicious and healthy alternative to holiday sweets.  Simple Squares are whole food snack bars made from just five ingredients: nuts, honey, vanilla, and hints of sea salt and herbs – that’s it.  Always free of wheat, gluten, dairy, soy and refined sugars. They are also organic, kosher and raw.

SIMPLE SQUARES are high in protein and other nutrients to keep you full and satisfied-so pumpkin pies and frosted gingerbread bread men won’t be a temptation.

I really like these bars.  Since I love coconut, you can probably guess that I would try the coconut bar first.  It was moist and chewy and delicious.  These bars are very portable and great to throw in your purse or car for a quick snack.

Simple Squares are available in a variety of flavors such as coconut, cinnamon-clove, rosemary, and sage.  (I also received a sample of coffee flavor which I think will be available soon.)

You can purchase them at simplesquares.com, Amazon or hundreds of retail outlets throughout the U.S.

Would you like to try new SIMPLE SQUARES?

I am pleased that founder Kimberly Crupi Dobbins is offering a mixed case of three bars of each flavor to one fabulous reader!

Are you running around trying to get your holiday shopping done?  Need a quick snack and can’t find anything healthy in the food court?

Bakery On Main Truebar to the rescue!  Truebars are a new, healthy alternative to the average granola bar.  I really like their motto “I’ve Got Nothing To Hide.”

Truebars are a good source of fiber, omega 3 from chia, made with many low-GI ingredients such as brown rice syrup, agave nectar, chia seed, and a variety of nuts.  They are GFCO Certified Gluten-Free.  They are dairy and casein free, non GMO, low sodium, kosher ou parve, all natural, wheat free, no trans fats or cholesterol and low in saturated fat!

Best of all, they travel well and taste great!

There are six fabulous flavors with whimsical names:

  • I’m a Hazelnut Chocolate Cherry Bar With Nothing To Hide
  • I’m a Walnut Cappuccino Bar With Nothing To Hide
  • I’m a Fruit & Nut Bar With Nothing To Hide
  • I’m a Raspberry Chocolate Almond Bar With Nothing To Hide
  • I’m a Coconut Cashew Bar With Nothing To Hide
  • I’m an Apricot Almond Chai Bar With Nothing To Hide

I have not tried them all, but my favorite so far is the “I’m a Coconut Cashew Bar With Nothing To Hide.”   I love anything coconut, so of course that is the first bar I tasted.  Really yummy!

Looking for a warm, healthy side dish to serve during the holidays and after?  Let’s face it.  Sometimes those rice mixes you get in the grocery aisle aren’t the healthiest.  The list of ingredients can be out of this world and some of the ingredients you can’t even pronounce.  At least I can’t!

Lundberg has a new Odle Wold Pilaf.  The ingredients are pure and simple:  Whole Grain Brown Rice, Whole Grain Wehani® Rice, Whole Grain Black Japonica™ Rice, Lentils, Black-Eyed Peas, Green Split Peas, and Yellow Split Peas.  It also meets the following special dietary requirements:

  • Whole Grain
  • Vegan
  • Non-GMO
  • Kosher
  • Gluten-free

The bag even is BPA-Free and comes with a great VELCRO closure!!!  I’ve never seen that before, have you?

Not only is this pilaf nutritionally sound, it tastes good!

I pared it up one night with sautéed chicken and spinach.  Delish!  We did find we had to add a little pepper for our tastes.  I’m thinking that it would be good with some chili powder and cumin added as well.  In fact, I think you could add meat and seasonings of your liking to make a complete meal!

Along with their new Olde World Pilaf , Lundberg has other wonderful Gourmet Blends and fabulous   You can click here to find a retailer near you.

Would you like to try Lundberg Rice & Beans Olde World Pilaf for free?   I am happy to be able to offer one bag of Old World Pilaf, one box of Penne Rice Pasta and one bag of Organic Spicy Rice Chips to one lucky reader!
