I have something today that the kids in your life are going to love! If they (or you) have read the Chronicles of Narnia books or have seen the movies, they will recognize many of the delicacies in “The Unofficial Narnia Cookbook: From Turkish Delight to Gooseberry Fool – Over 150 Recipes Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia” by Dinah Bucholz. Even if you aren’t familiar with this series, you will love the whimsical, magical nature of this book.
For this review, I consulted my daughter, who is very familiar with the Chronicles of Narnia stories. We sat and went through all of the recipes in the book. She really thought it was fun to see all of the foods she remembers from the novels.
Toffee fruit for breakfast? Sure, if you are dining with Fledge! From “BREAKFAST WITH FLEDGE”:
“Digory is so eager to prove himself that he takes off with Polly without a thought for provisions. So the children share between them a bag of toffees, and on a impulse, Digory plants the last toffee. And lo! In the morning, they find that a toffee tree covered with soft toffee fruit has sprung up.” (The Magician’s Nephew, chapters 12-13)
This book is full of enchanting recipes to try with your child. Some of the recipes my daughter and I want to try are:
Cheesy Scrambled Eggs
Sweet and Creamy Hot Vanilla
Iced Sherbet (Creamy Orange Sherbet)
Flat, Flabby Cakes (Brown Sugar-Cinnamon Pancakes)
Heavenly Honey Cake
This book is recommended for children ages 9 and up. I would like to mention that it is not a gluten-free cookbook, but that there are several recipes that are naturally gluten-free or that with the help of an adult, could be made gluten-free by using gluten-free ingredients.
