Did you know that May is Celiac Awareness Month?  It is a great time to learn more about this disease that affects approximately 1 in 133 people in the United States.  A great resource of information on celiac can be found at

If you have a child with celiac disease, you may already know how difficult it can be to explain his/her special diet to others.

Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise” by Debbie Simpson is written in easy to understand kid language that is great for both children and adults to read.

From Debbie’s website:

“Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise  is about the acceptance that is required  by the child with a special diet and of the understanding required by those who  are important parts of his or her life.  We live in a world where the word “diet” is synonymous with “cheat a little”.  It’s difficult for many to understand that this is a diet that requires 100% adherence.  And with this  comes an emotional need to be understood, for whoever the person requiring this strict diet may be, whether one or one hundred years of age.

Follow Adam through the first six months of a new school year after discovering he has celiac.
Adam offers children with food allergies and intolerances a positive role model as he faces classroom celebrations with a smile and “That’s o.k.!”.  But this book isn’t just for kids.  Adam is also a great resource for teachers, family, babysitters and friends.”

Author Debbie Simpson is a mom, grandma, Early Childhood teacher, Birth – Three parent educator, and gluten free since September 2000.   She writes a wonderful blog, sharing recipes, celiac information and her personal insights and observations about living gluten free.

“Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise” is a heartwarming, fun to read story about a young boy facing the challenges of following his gluten free diet at school.   This book really struck a chord with me and I may have even shed a few happy tears while reading it.  Everyone  just wants to be understood, right?

“Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise” would be a great gift for a family member, friend, teacher, school library or church school.

You can purchase “Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise” easily on Debbie’s website HERE.  It’s even available in a Kindle edition!

  1. I would use the book to show family and friends why my daughter (8 months) needs to be gluten free. (My family thinks its not that big of a deal) Also will be a great resource when my daughter has questions later on!

  2. it would be for me to help teach my kids about celiacs since i just recently found out i have it

  3. I would love to be considered for this giveaway. Recently we found out that my 10-year-old daughter has celiac’s disease. I’m constantly looking for yummy ways to make eating gluten-free fun and enjoyable for her. Thank you for allowing me to be considered. I have liked on Facebook

  4. … would love to win a copy for my library where I work as a sub. The only gluten free book in the Children’s area is no longer being printed and parents who see this book would be inspired to buy it, especially the Kindle editon that so many kids use today,

  5. I would use this book to help educate my boys as to why their sister has to eat gluten free and how eating the gluten free food that I make can be good for them too

  6. I would like to win this book so that in the case that my 7-month-old ends up with Celiac disease since I have it, I would have a nice way to teach and talk to him about it. It would also be nice to share with friends of his (and some of mine for that matter).

  7. For myself.

  8. My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac in July (at 8 years old). We bought the Kindle version and she LOVES it! I would allow her to choose if she wants to keep it so that she will always have a copy to educate her friends and to bring into school to share with her teacher and class each school year or to donate to the school so there is a copy in their school library. Every school library should have a copy!
