Wow!  Have I got a book for you!  If you love Southern cooking or have a friend or relative who does, you must have this cookbook!

“Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking” by Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubart is a wonderful addition to any cookbook collection.  This book is HUGE!  It is like a dictionary of Southern hospitality.

Not only are there great recipes in this book, but there are fantastic, step-by-step directions on how to make just about anything you want to make!

Want to make an omelet or hard boiled eggs?  It’s in here.

As you can see, this book would be perfect for a brand, new cook or for someone who wants to brush up their skills in the kitchen.

This is a beautiful book.  I would be happy to display this on my coffee table for guests to look through.  It’s just lovely.  Oh, and you will love the story of how this book came to be.  I don’t want to give too much away, but it involves Julia Child.  ;-)

Now, let’s get to some of the recipes:

  • Fried Watermelon Rind
  • Baby Crab Cakes
  • Caramelized Peach Salad
  • Cream of Carrot and Zucchini Soup (pictured above)
  • Stone-Ground-Grits-Fried Onion Rings
  • Fried Catfish
  • Oven-Fried Chicken Breasts with Pecan Crust
  • Caramel Cream Pecan Crust Pie
  • Simple Chocolate Mousse
  • Mother’s Chocolate Cream Fudge
  • Easy Refrigerator Strawberry Jam
  • and that’s only a few of the over 600 recipes!

Of course I must mention that this is by no means a gluten-free cookbook.  But just because it’s Southern, doesn’t mean it’s all foods fried in flour and egg batter!  There are loads of recipes that would fit any diet, are either naturally gluten-free, or can be altered by using gluten-free ingredients.

“Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking” can be purchased on Amazon.com and at Barnes & Noble.

I am also pleased to be able to give away on copy of “Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking” to one lucky reader!

To enter this giveaway, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW.

This giveaway will run from today (Thursday, December 6, 2012) until Friday, December 14, 2012 at 5pm Pacific Time.

The winner will be notified via email.

Good luck!

  1. Great giveaway.

  2. What a perfect book! After living down South for 10 years and moving back North(I’ve been back here for 13 years), I can still miss the great Southern food-the fried chicken, okra and the list goes on and on…..

  3. Yum! That Caramelized Peach Salad sounds delicious!!

  4. I can’t wait to make those delicious recipes! I’m always looking for new recipes and would love to try Southern cooking.

  5. My Mom was from Tennessee, passed away 30 years ago and I still miss her. I can’t make cornbread or black-eyed peas without childhood memories of her slaving away in her ’50s kitchen. Even though my brother and I were raised (reared) in Wisconsin we learned to appreciate “Rebel food.” Since she did all her cooking without recipes, I will use this book to stir up memories. All puns intended.

  6. Those look delicious! Especially love okra. Thanks for the giveaway.
